Main Description:
This official bronze medallion was issued in 1974 to commemorate the United States Bicentennial (1776–1976) and honor the role of the state of Ohio during the American Revolution. Commissioned by the Ohio American Revolution Bicentennial Advisory Commission, the medallion was minted by The Lincoln Mint of Chicago.
This is the first issue in the Ohio Bicentennial Medallion series and features the award-winning design by Lynn Anderson, a 17-year-old student from Poland, Ohio, who won the statewide competition.
The obverse features the Great Seal of the State of Ohio with rising sun, mountains, and sheaves of wheat. The reverse shows a detailed high-relief scene titled “New Frontiers”, portraying Ohio pioneers, horses, and settlers among wooded landscapes.
The medallion comes in its original official folder with historical documentation, artist bio, and a letter signed by Robert E. Cecile, Chairman of the Advisory Commission. Funds from sales supported Ohio Bicentennial community projects in 1976.
