Gem Proof 2006-S Sacagawea "Golden" Dollar All coins will be taken from 2006 Proof Sets and professionally packaged with gloved hands so they will arrive safely in pristine condition. These S-mint mark coins, proof struck the San Francisco Mint, are the most beautiful examples this coin because they display deep mirror-like fields and frosty design. The Golden Dollar's front has Sacagawea portrayed in three-quarter profile. On her back, Sacagawea carries Jean Baptiste, her infant son. Six months pregnant when she joined the Lewis and Clark expedition, Sacagawea gave birth to Jean Baptiste early in the journey. In rendering Sacagawea, Goodacre included the large, dark eyes attributed to her in Shoshone legends. Goodacre also used a present-day Shoshone college student as her model.
Why This Product Is Valuable
The Sacagawea Dollar, first released in 2000, honors the Native American guide who helped lead the Lewis & Clark expedition. The 2006-S Proof version is particularly desirable for several reasons:
-
Proof Quality: Struck with extra care using polished dies and planchets for a deep cameo effect.
-
San Francisco Mint (S): Only minted for collector sets, not for circulation.
-
Low Mintage: Only produced for annual proof sets, making them far scarcer than circulation strikes.
-
Golden Appearance: Though not made of real gold, its manganese-brass composition gives it a warm, gold-like finish.
-
Popular Native American Design: Features Sacagawea with her child, a beloved and culturally significant U.S. coin design.
-
Strong Collector Demand: Modern proof dollars are popular among U.S. Mint series collectors.
